Actress and her musician husband reactivate divorce proceedings

When some Pittsburgh couples decide to begin the divorce process, it can be a time of doubt. A couple may choose, after beginning the process, to attempt to work things out before calling it quits. This may be particularly common with couples who have children and want to remain together for their benefit. While some couples may be able to work out their differences, some differences are irreconcilable, and the couple may ultimately proceed with the divorce.

Actress Laura Dern and musician Ben Harper are divorcing after such a reconciliation attempt. The couple married in 2005 and in 2010 filed for divorce, only to suspend the process. The divorce lay dormant for two years, but Dern filed divorce papers earlier this month to reactivate proceedings.

In the latest filing, Dern requested primary physical custody as well as joint legal custody of the couple’s two children, ages 10 and 7. It is mentioned that Dern is the sole caregiver of two children from Harper’s previous relationship, though it isn’t said what will become of their custody after the divorce. Additionally, Dern is seeking spousal support and child support. She is also asking that her attorney fees be covered in the settlement.

While it is not said what prompted Dern to reactivate the couple’s divorce proceeding, this is not an altogether uncommon occurrence. Even if a couple wishes to work out their differences and stay together, it is not always possible. Many Pittsburgh couples may find that they are better off and able to interact more positively around each other and their children if they end their irreconcilable differences through a divorce.
